Tailings engineers are increasingly embracing a performance-based design approach, as the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management recommended. But what does this mean? It refers to utilising surveillance data throughout the facility’s lifecycle to adjust design parameters and estimate future performance.
A recent paper published by five of our geotechnical engineers outlines a performance-based approach used to calibrate the design parameters of a fine, high-plasticity tailings material for subsequent closure works. The calibration demonstrated good consistency between the predicted and measured deformation and strength values.
